Q. Tell us about Jailen J the blogger. How did you get started?
A. My name is Jailen James, I am from Silver Spring Maryland and I am a recent graduate from Bennett College for Women, my degree is in Journalism and Media Studies. I like to think that fashion was my first love, and then beauty. From a young age my fashion has been A1 , thanks to my mom. I remember being young singing a song that my nana made up called “What’s in the bag” where I opened a bag full of clothes and shoes while dancing. As growing up, my style has evolved; by high school I had my own sense of style. I started my own fashion club at my high school called “Fashion Couture” where I put annual fashion shows. During my undergrad I styled fashion shows, walked in fashion, by that time I was asked to join a YouTube series show called the “#TheHashTag” where I had my own segment Fashion Gal where I reported news on fashion and beauty. After speaking with different people working in the fashion industry and having a lot people come up to me telling me I need to start a blog. That's when I decided to start my blog; I came up with marketing plan that I’m still following and actual works.
Q. What was the influence or the motivation that made you to want to become a Fashion Blogger and create a YouTube channel?
A. The influence of me starting my blog was always having the vision, my mom, and all my friends and random people coming up to telling me to start my blog. I did start with YouTube but I notice it was time consuming and at the time I was not being constant, but I do plan on returning to YouTube.
Q. How important is it to have a mentor?
A. I would say it is really important to have a mentor, because mentors teach you all the ins and outs of the field that you're going into. As well as be there for you.
Q. Being that you are into fashion… How do you fell about the representation today, from the runway, to the fashion magazines?
A. I think that over the years fashion and the fashion industry has evolved and is still evolving: when it comes to street style; diversity with models on the runway; and the culture in general.
Q. You are now a college graduate, Congratulations!! How do you balance with being a student, having your YouTube channel, and being a Fashion Blogger?
A. Thank You! When I first decided that I wanted to start blogging and YouTube I came up with schedule for the month as well what I wanted to do. Once that was done I made sure it worked with my school schedule since that took up all of my time. It was hard at first but after a while it was easy.
Q. What advice would you give to someone who wants pursue being a Fashion Blogger?
A. The advice that I would give someone who wants to pursue a blog, just do it and don’t hold yourself back. When start to questioning yourself, you will never start, trust me I did it to myself.
Q. What’s next for Jailen J.?
A. My next step is to of course put more content for my blog , travel , start looking into grad school, and live a successful & care-free life in my 20’s.
